Bloody hell.

She’s only gone and given me her credit card.

And the pin number.

I honestly thought she was going to ask me to leave, but no, I got that completely wrong, which just shows that I can’t read her as well as I thought I could. Slightly worrying, but there it is.

Then when she said she’d like to help with buying baby things, I thought, here goes, she’s going to want to go shopping with me, and how excruciating is that going to be? I had a vision of the two of us trundling around the baby shops together and the thought wasn’t in the slightest bit appealing. The widow and the pregnant lover, not that she knows that but still, a bit cringing. And there would also be the distinct possibility of bumping into someone I know when I was with her, which would have been an added stress. But I could force myself to do it and even pretend to be grateful to her, as long as she was paying for everything. Pretty big of me, I think, because she is still alive and Ricky is dead. But I would have done it, because I wasn’t lying when I said I had nothing for the baby. The lack of baby stuff has been playing on my mind a bit, what with prams and whatnot costing a small fortune. Me and Ricky had looked online and picked out a few things to go and look at before he died and I couldn’t believe the price of it all. It’s not something that can be scrimped on, either, because I don’t want second-hand crappy stuff for my baby, thanks very much. Why should I?

But no, she didn’t want to come with me, thank God, she just wants to pay for it all.

Absolutely fine by me.

I said no at first, of course, because I had to make it look as if she was being too generous and I have my pride and couldn’t possibly take it. I then let myself be persuaded very easily because I couldn’t risk her believing what I was saying and withdrawing the offer. Once that was settled, she didn’t hang around, either; she got straight up out of her chair, went and got the card and gave it to me, right there and then. I eventually managed to mumble ‘thank you’ and for once, I was nearly lost for words.

I was itching to start spending but I waited until the Monday when she’d gone back to work. As soon as I got up in the afternoon and was washed and dressed, I was straight down the town to order a pram and a cot. I couldn’t resist buying some nice clothes for him too, because he’ll need something to wear, won’t he? He has to wear something and it’s not as if I can knit. I didn’t skimp, either, because if Ricky was here, he’d have bought the best, so why should I go cheap? I had
